Sabrina Carpenter, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello may come face-to-face at the 2024 Video Music Awards amid their rumored love triangle.
On Tuesday, MTV announced that Mendes was added to the long list of performers for the upcoming awards show, which already includes Cabello and Carpenter.
It’s unclear what each musician plans to sing at the star-studded event on Sept. 11 held at New York’s UBS Arena.
Many social media users were shocked by the “diabolical” decision to include all three singers – yet applauded the network for leaning into the “drama.”
“The VMAS really got Camila, Sabrina, AND shawn performing… lord this is gonna be one interesting night,” one user wrote, to which another agreed, “sabrina, camila & shawn all performing at the vmas is crazy LMAO.”
“Camila, Sabrina & Shawn? The VMAS messy as hell,” a third chimed in.
The news came just days after the “Espresso” singer dropped her latest album, “Short n’ Sweet,” which fans believe featured several songs about her alleged romance with the “Treat You Better” crooner.
Mendes, 26, and Carpenter, 25, were first linked in February 2023 after they were spotted out and about in Los Angeles.
The duo added fuel to the fire the following month after they were photographed leaving Miley Cyrus’ album release party together and mingling at the Vanity Fair Oscars party.
Despite reports that the pair were “seeing each other,” Mendes insisted they were “not dating” during a Q&A with fans.
Less than a month later, the “Stitches” singer was spotted kissing Cabello at Coachella — which Carpenter seemed to reference in her new song “Coincidence.”
“What a surprise, your phone just died / Your car drove itself from LA to her thighs / Palm Springs looks nice, but who’s by your side?” she sings.
“Damn it, she looks kinda like the girl you outgrew,” she continues. “Least that’s what you said / What a coincidence.”
Elsewhere in the song, Carpenter describes her lover and his ex getting closer again and “trying to turn the past into the present tense.”
Cabello and Mendes notably began dating in 2019 but split after two years of dating. However, the on-again, off-again couple was periodically spotted together in the months following their breakup.
She also seemingly hints at the situation in her album’s opener, “Taste,” which is about a man going back and forth between a new fling and his ex-girlfriend.
“I heard you’re back together and if that’s true / You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you / If you want forever, I bet you do / Just know you’ll taste me too,” Carpenter sings.
Fans also believe her songs “Sharpest Tool” and “Dumb & Poetic” could be about Mendes.
Although the hunky singer has kept quiet about the alleged love triangle, Cabello seemingly reacted to the drama by posting a TikTok of herself lip-syncing to her song “June Gloom,” rumored to be about Carpenter.
“She’s cool, I heard / Won’t act surprised, I saw the pictures,” Cabello sings in the song, which came out in June 2024. “We’re a house fire, for sure / Hope it’ll burn out, but it just gets bigger.”
“If she’s so amazing, why are you on this side of town?” she continues. “If you like her so much, what are you here trying to find out?”
Although Carpenter moved on from Mendes with “Saltburn” star Barry Keoghan, the “Senorita” duo sparked reconciliation rumors, once again, after attending the Copa America Final together last month.
